Over 1.2 million foreign tourists visit Sri Lanka so far this year

COLOMBO—More than 1.2 million foreign tourists have arrived in Sri Lanka this year, with China becoming one of the largest source markets for Sri Lanka tourism, statistics from Sri Lanka’s Tourism Ministry showed. The figures showed that over 160,000 Chinese tourists have visited Sri Lanka this year, while in July alone 28,445 Chinese tourists arrived in the island country. Tourism Minister John Amaratunga told Xinhua that Sri Lanka was depending on the Chinese market to boost its tourist arrivals and the country was encouraging more Chinese to visit the island country.
He said thanks to direct air links between Colombo and several Chinese cities, more and more Chinese tourists are now attracted to Sri Lanka. A total of 271,577 Chinese visited Sri Lanka in 2016, making China the second-largest source market for Sri Lanka’s tourism, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
